Davis Mountains State Park is located in Fort Davis which is about 2 hours north of Big Bend National Park. When we left Big Bend National Park, we traveled north to Davis Mountains State Park. This is a wonderful state park and probably one of the best in the state of Texas. The scenery in and around the park is absolutely beautiful.

The park has tons of RV spaces. Some have full hookups others power & water. Most of the sites are pull through and easily accessible. The thing that impressed us the most was the amount of private space around each space. We were stayed in site number 10.

There is so much to do in Davis Mountains State Park:

We had a great time watching the wild life. Each morning and evening small groups of deer would come by our campsite looking for food. We didn’t feed them but they were almost tame. A few of them got close enough that I could actually pet them on the head. We also saw small herds of javalina after dark. These are some strange little creatures and there are hundreds of them in the park.

While staying here we attended a star party at the MacDonald Observatory. The observatory was great. The staff and volunteers had about 20 different sized telescopes setup all pointed at different stars. We really enjoyed the star party.

We also toured the Fort Davis National Historic Site as well. Fort Davis is wonderfully preserved. They had a great scavenger hunt that my daughter Taylor enjoyed doing. It is quite involved and took us about 1.5 hours but it made us visit just about every aspect of the Fort and really appreciate it. A very neat experience if you are in the area and have time. Here are some photos of the Fort Davis National Historic Site.

We also attended an hour long session on owls at the interpretive center. The elder gentleman that gave the presentation was outstanding. We laughed quite a bit and learned quite a bit as well.

Finally there are some great views from the top of one of the mountains in the park especially from the hiking trails. You can also just drive up Skyline Drive and you will see back into the park as well as look down over the town of Fort Davis. This is a great place to visit and we had a great time. Here are some photos of the views from inside the park.

Fort Davis State Park is a great RV destination. If you are out visiting Big Bend, schedule a day or at Fort Davis and you won’t regret it.
