Pioneer RV Beach Resort in Port Aransas was the first time we have taken our RV to the beach.  We have always loved hanging out at the beach especially when we lived on the east coast and could go to Florida beaches easily (such as St. Augustine).   We did enjoy our stay, but not everything was as we would have liked it.

On the positive side, the management at Pioneer was friendly and helpful.  We were in a basic pull through site in center of the resort.  The site was level, water pressure was good and we had no problems getting into the site and settling in.  We had a pretty good hike to the beach, I would say about 1/3 of a mile.

On the negative side, we had a few issues:

  • Golf Carts – Pioneer should rename itself to “Golf Cart Beach Resort”.  Everyone it seems has a golf cart and they drive them everywhere.  We were almost run over multiple times as they is little to no consideration for pedestrians.  Many of the drivers were drinking and most likely intoxicated.  The walk over the boardward to the beach was especially trouble some as the Golf Cart drivers assumed they had the right of way and would almost run you over.
  • Extremely small RV Sites – The RV sites were very narrow.  You can see in the photo above there was very little room between the RVs.  Maybe this is normal in places like this.  We prefer the openness of state parks.
  • Beach Quality – Since I grew up going to Florida beaches, the Port Aransas Beach pales in comparison.  The water is dirty, tons of seaweed and oil on the beach.

It is very nice to be able to drive the truck down on the beach and bring all of our “beach stuff” with us.  The canopy was very nice to have as well.  The beach was actually very crowded on the weekend but not so much during the week.

Since we were not far from Corpus Christi, we spent a morning at the Texas State Aquarium.  We had a blast there and really enjoyed the dolphin show.  All in all, the trip was good but we wished for a better place to stay without the crazy Golf Cart drivers and a better beach.  Next year we are going to try South Padre Island.
